The Qur'an and the Role of Women

In our studies, we have learned about Chinese and Japanese culture, and those cultures view of women's role.  In each, women are meant to be obedient and subservient to men.  In Islam, women's role is presented in a different way.  Below are three excerpts from the Qur'an, please read each of them and do the following:

In 7-10 sentences, discuss:
1) Are men and women viewed as equals in the Qur'an?
2) What does the Qur'an say to prove your point-of-view? (give specific examples)

Excerpts from the Qur'an

"O mankind! We have created you male and female and appointed you races and tribes, that you may know one another.  Surely the noblest among you in the sight of God is the most God fearing of you..."(49:13)

"And the believers the men and the women, are friends one of the other; they bid to honor and forbid dishonor; they perform the prayer, and pay the alms, and they obey God and His Messenger.  Those upon them God will have mercy..."(9:71)

"Men and women who have surrendered (unto Allah), believing men and believing women, obedient men and obedient women, truthful men and truthful women, enduring men and enduring women, humble men and humble women, men and women who give in charity, men who fast and women who fast, men and women who remember God much, for them God has prepared forgiveness and a mighty reward." (33:35)

    1. Men and women were viewed as equals in the qur'an. They would have both had to live up to the same expectations. Also men and women had the same rules to follow. It shows that they both would have mercy if the had been good. Also that they all had to bid to honor and forbid dishonor. They both did all the rules like, to give to charity and to fast. They would getGods prepared forgiveness and a mighty reward.

    2. In the Qur'an, or the holy book of Islam, views men and women equal in the eyes of Allah. When referring to mankind (49:13), the book mentions that Allah had "...created you male and female..." instead of just saying men. In other civilizations, such as China or Rome, only men would be mentioned, or be considered part of mankind. Also, in section (9:71) and (33:35) orders and duties are given to the men and women, ",truthful men and truthful women, enduring men and enduring women,...". Although these excerpts of the Qur'an do not show if men are still superior to women, the way the book mentions the two in the same way show that women are treated fairly, if not equal to men. At the end of the section (33:35) it also promises men and women the same reward if they worship Allah.",men who fast, and women who fast, men and women who remember God much, for them God has prepared forgiveness and a mighty reward." Unlike other holy books for different religions, the Qur'an views men and women as equals, and relays the message of God in the same way to both genders.

    3. Men and women are viewed equally in the Qur'an. They bid honor and forbid dishonor to each other, which shows they respect each other as equals. They were created it says so they may know each other so they can all pray under the religion of Islam. Men and women have the same rules to live by as Muslims. They all have to pray five times a day and give charity, so why shouldn't they be viewed equally? In the end, they all practice the same religion and if they follow each rule they will all receive Gods forgiveness and a mighty reward.

    4. In the Qur'an men and women are equal. The Qur'an proves my point by men and women have the same traits and responsibilities in it. Men and women are both obedient and truthful, and so on. They both have the responsibilities of praying, fasting, and giving to charity. They both have to obey God and his messenger. They are also both bidden to honor, and forbidden from dishonor. If they both follow and obey God they will have his mercy. That is why in the Qur'an men and women are equal.

    5. Based on excerpts from the Qur'an, men and women are viewed as equals. Men and women have the same rules to follow given by God. They both fast and both men and women remember god showing they are both equals in the Qur'an. The excerpt says both men and women were created and appointed to races and tribes, that you may know one another. If men were more important than women they would not be mentioned as an equal in the book of the Qur'an. Both men and women have the same expectations to live up to and God has prepared forgiveness and a mighty reward for them. Men and women are equally valued in the book of the Qur'an.

    6. In the Qur'an excerpts from above it is easy to gather that men and women are treated equal. Throughout the passages, the Qur'an states both men and women in the muslim faith are to be treated equal. They clearly state that both men and women are to pray, give to the poor, and obey god. This statement mentions both men and women doing the same things and it shows no trace that men should be more highly regarded than women. The passage even says "And the believers, the men and the women, are friends one of the other". The mention of friendship between men and women and the sense of unity this sentence has shows no sign in any way that women are subservient to men. Also, at the end of passage three, the Qur'an says "...God has prepared forgiveness and a mighty reward". The "mighty reward" is offered to both men and women! Both men or women are worthy of the reward which proves the point that men and women are treated equally in the Qur'an. The Qur'an views both men and women as equal people because whats really important lies on the inside.

    7. In the Qur'an women and men are created equal. It talks a lot about how God created both and put them where they belonged so they could work together to spread the word of Islam. When I usually think about Islam and Muslim people I think of the men always bossing around the women and that the Qur'an told the men that they were better than the women and that they should be able to push the women around and tell them what to do. It seams that the Qur'an actually teaches them that they are all equal and that God created all of them so they aren't different at all. They are all on the earth, they are all human, God created them equal, and they are all on the earth for the same purpose. "We have created you male and female and appointed you races and tribes, that you may know one another." Another point that proves my point is "And the believers the men and the women, are friends one of the other; they bid to honor and forbid dishonor; they perform the prayer, and pay the alms, and they obey God and His Messenger." This proves that that Muhammad taught the people that they were equal and that they were all created by Allah to spread his words and prayers.

    8. I think that in the Islamic faith, women and men are equal. Men and women are to have equal respect for each other and should also the same amount of loyalty and devotion to God. In the line 33:35 of the Qur'an, refers to men and women as having the same loyalties to God. It states that men and women can surrender themselves to God equally, and both are to have the same duties to their faith. Also in line 9:71, the Qur'an states that men and women who are believers are to regard each other as friends and with honor. In excerpt 49:13, it says that mankind were created both male and female and were given races and tribes, but the only difference in importance is those who are loyal to God and those who aren't. No where in any of the excerpts are men given a more important role in Islam than women. I interpret these excerpts as saying that anyone who is loyal to God and obeys the ideas of Islam is equal to everyone else, man or woman.

    9. Based on the excerpts from the Qur'an, men and women are indeed shown as equals. Both are expected to follow the same rules and guidelines. Both men and women pray at the same time, five times per day, every day. Both strive to achieve honor and avoid dishonor at all cost. Men and women are both expected to live in obedient submission, under their God and his messenger. Male and Female are both expected to pay their alms, fast, and be truthful during their everyday life. Above all else they seek the forgiveness that God has prepared for them and the mighty reward that they will receive.

    10. In the previous two cultures we studied, Japan and China, women were not equal to men. Based upon the three excerpts provided from the Qur’an, women and men are considered to be equals. Each of the three points provided are proof that there is equality between men and women. In the first excerpt (49:13) the Qur’an states that mankind is created as both male and female without any rank or class distinction. The Qur’an states, “Surely the noblest among you in the sight of God is the most God fearing of you…”. This passages demonstrates the equality between men and women and discusses the importance of being noble to God is the most important aspect a person needs to be. In section (33:35), the Qur’an states that men and women equally have to surrender to Allah, be obedient, truthful, enduring, humble, give to charity, fast and remember God. By doing these important things, God has prepared forgiveness for them regardless if they are a man or a woman. The Qur’an consistently stresses the importance of Allah’s rules and the way a man or woman need to live their lives to receive God’s forgiveness and reward.

  2. Based on the excerpts I read from the Qur'an, I feel that men and women are represented as equal. Some examples to prove my point of view are: according to the Qur'an, men and women are both called to be God fearing. As believers, they are both expected to honor Allah and obey his messenger. Men and women who follow Allah will both receive forgiveness and a mighty reward. There are no different rules or rewards that separate how men and women should worship or follow Allah. From reading these excerpts, both men and women have the same expectations and will receive the same rewards. I believe that the these reasons support my point of view that men and women are equal in the Qur'an.

  3. In the qur'an men and women were both viewed as equals. They both follow the same rules like, men who fast and women who fast, they both had to bid to honor and forbid dishonor. "And believers the men and the women, are friends one of the other;they bid to honor and forbod to dishonor; they preform the prayer, and pay the alms, and they obey God and his messenger.

  4. In the Qur'an, both men and women are viewed as equals. When reffering to an excerpt on mankind (49:13), the Qur'an states that Allah "created you both male and female," insted of stating that Allah created only males. This is different than other religions because the Torah and Bible refer to mankind as just "men" while the Qur'an refers to both men and women. According to excerpts (9:31) and (33:35) the Qur'an mentions the orders and duties of both men and women such as being "humble men and humble women, men and women who give charity." These excerpts do not pose men to being higher than women on lifes social scale, they prove that unlike many other religions, the Muslims believe that both genders are equal. The excerpts also prove that Allah ceated them equally, and wants them to live and treat others as equals. As disciples, believers and followers of Allah, are both expected of the same things: they must honnor Allah and obey Him and His messenger. If they do this, "God has prepared forgiveness and a mighty reward" (33:35) for them. Unlike many other religious, the Qur'an relays the messages of Allah to both men and women as equals and does not have one gender overshadow the other.

  5. In the Qur'an, both men and women are looked at as equals as well as written like that as well. The Holy book states each gender in all of its writings when talking about obeying there god and all the men and women who have surrendered to his mercy. For example, the Qur'an says in section (33:35) "humble men and humble women" another line "truthful men and truthful women. Neither line mentions one or the other, they are both there which means no differences in freedom for the women. Allah also makes it clear in the writings that he wants all men and women to be treated equally. When the know each other and they are good to each other, he promises them mercy and a reward for obeying and believing in him.

  6. In the Qur'an men and women are viewed as equals. A strong example of this is in excerpt (49:13) where it states, "Surely the noblest among you in the sight of God is the most God fearing of you". This means that women should not fear men, as they would in other ancient civilizations like Japan and China, they should only fear God. Another example of equality in men and women in the Qur'an is from the excerpt (9:71). The Qur'an states, "the men and the women, are friends one of the other", this means that the men and the women of Islam are friends and get along with one another. One gender is not superior to the other, instead they are equal, just as Confucius thought they should be in China. In excerpt (9:71) it is also said that "they perform the prayer, and pay the alms, and they obey God and His Messenger". This refers to 'they' as men and women. Both genders pray, pay the alms and obey God as one. Not as if they are two separate beings but as BOTH men and women. Not just men like in Japan. Lastly, in excerpt (33:35) the Qur'an states "men who fast and women who fast, men and women who remember God much, for them God has prepared forgiveness and a mighty reward" shows that both genders will be recognized and rewarded for following God. One gender does not receive a higher award than the other and God treats them equally, just as the Islamic people do.

  7. In the Qur'an, both men and women are considered equal. In 49:13, the Qur'an says that both men and women have both been appointed races and tribes. This is one example of how both men and women are granted equal things. In 9:71, it refers to both men and women in the beginning. It states that God will have mercy upon both men and women. In 33:35, the Qur'an states that God has prepared forgiveness and a mighty reward for everyone. This means that God has the same forgiveness and reward for both men and women.

  8. I think men and women are viewed as equals in the Qur'an. In all of the passages from the Qur'an, the men and women are given the same responsibilities so they must be viewed as equal. The Qur'an also referrers to men and women instead of just men in society. In 33:35 the same responsibilities are given once for the men and again for the women. The Qur'an is saying that gender doesn't matter, the person's faith in God is what matters and will be rewarded. In 9:71, it says that God does not care if you are a man or a woman. All that matters is they obey the Qur'an, and God will give mercy to them.

  9. In the qur'an men and woman are seen as equal. They all follow the same rules stated in the qur'an. When reading through the passage you may notice that people are never referred to as "men". Whenever the holy book makes a statement that includes people it says "men and woman". Because of this you can see that in the Islamic religion there is no preferred gender. This is kind of unusual because in most religions men are more preferable on the social scale. The qur'an is a very excepting book in both genders.

  11. Men and women were viewed equally in the Quran. They are both required to honor and respect Allah and Muhammad. For example, both men and woman are required to fast all day during the thirty days of Ramadan. They also have to be " believing men and believing woman, obedient men and obedient woman etc." This also shows that the Quran compares men and woman directly and believes that they are equal. Also, another part of the Quran, " and the the believers, the men and the woman, are friends one of the other" clearly states that the Quran thinks that men and woman are equal. Men and women both strive to achieve a great reward and forgiveness from God. They are all worshipping the same God and trying to please their God, so it wouldn't be right for the woman to be treated differently.

  12. I honestly think men and women are viewed as equal people in the Qur’an. In all three verses of the Qur’an shown includes both men and women viewed as equals. For example the qur’an says "O mankind! We have created you male and female and appointed you races and tribes, that you may know one another. Surely the noblest among you in the sight of God is the most God fearing of you..."(49:13). The Qur’an has an and between male and female making the (49:13) verse fair because it included male and female. The next verse "And the believers the men and the women, are friends one of the other; they bid to honor and forbid dishonor; they perform the prayer, and pay the alms, and they obey God and His Messenger. Those upon them God will have mercy..."(9:71). The verse (9:71) in the Qur’an also shows men and women as equals. The Qur’an says that the men and women are friends to each other, the verse (9:71) in the Qur’an also says the word they a lot meaning both men and women making the verse (9:71) equal also. The next verse "Men and women who have surrendered (unto Allah), believing men and believing women, obedient men and obedient women, truthful men and truthful women, enduring men and enduring women, humble men and humble women, men and women who give in charity, men who fast and women who fast, men and women who remember God much, for them God has prepared forgiveness and a mighty reward." (33:35) The verse (33:35) also shows men and women being equal in the Qur’an. For example this verse is similar to verse (49:13) , in the text of the verse (33:35) it says that men and women both show believing, obedience, truthfulness, enduringness, and humbleness making the verse (33:35) show that women and men are equals.

  13. In my opinion the Men and women of the Islamic faith are both viewed equally. They are all looked at by god the same as the other gender. The verse (33:35) really stood out for me because every time the Qur'an stated something that the surrenders did bother woman and men were the same. this verse states "Men and women who have surrendered (unto Allah), believing men and believing women, obedient men and obedient women, truthful men and truthful women, enduring men and enduring women, humble men and humble women, men and women who give in charity, men who fast and women who fast, men and women who remember God much, for them God has prepared forgiveness and a mighty reward." (33:35) every time a man was mentioned so was a woman. This shows that in the Qur'an men and woman are looked at equally.

  14. In the Qu'ran men and women were equal. In none of thw writing it mentioned women being below men or unequal rights. God created men and women the sme and to both be respectful and obedient to God. The Qu'ran even mentions them being friends, "the believers, the men and women are friends one of another". The only mention of obedience is to God, not from women to men, they both serve equal. In (49:13) " O mankind we have created you male and female" shows that god isnt only talking to men but is acknowledging women who he is speaking to aswel.

  15. Yeah based on the exerts from the text above and other peoples comments, I also agree that men and women are both equally respected. They are trying to say that if you obey the rules and honor god than yes, you will be granted and gifted, either women or man. And if you prove it, you will be gifted no matter what race or what gender or whatever you may be, you can be gifted. And it says that "if you have surrendered" you will be forgiven and rewarded. Almost like the Christian religion but little differences in the majority. It also says that you must believe. If you don't believe than you shall not be gifted. "those upon him will have mercy" You shall also have to obey god to be gifted, as it says in the first paragraph. Last but not least, you shall pray to seek forgiveness and be gifted.

  16. I think that in the Qur'an, men and women were viewed equal. The Qur'an states that men are as capable as women and women are as capable as men. The Qur'an says that, "And the believers the men and the women, are friends of one another...". This shows that men and women respect one another and live in compatibility which each other equally. The Qur'an also says, "believing men and believing women, obedient men and obedient women, truthful men and truthful women, enduring men and enduring women..." In every phrase the mention both men and women not just men over women. Allah treats men and women equally as long as they are loyal to him and to mankind.

  17. In the Qur'an, I believe that it views men and women as equal. The men and women believe all the same things, and will do whatever God asks of them. For example, in (9:71), it says that "the men and the women, are friends one of the other; they bid to honor and forbid dishonor; they perform the prayer, and pay the alms, and they obey God and His Messenger." This quote says that the men and women are friends and equal to each and every one of the other, as they share beliefs and prayers and will receive mercy from God if they follow him together, as a people.

  18. Unlike ancient Japanese and Chinese cultures, the Qur’an suggests that men and women are equals in Islamic culture. A quote from the excerpt (49:13) says, “We have created you male and female…” The Qur’an talks about men and women together showing that they are not thought to be different. Another quote from excerpt (9:71) says, “...men and the women, are friends one of the other; they bid to honor and forbid dishonor; they perform the prayer, and pay the alms, and they obey God and His Messenger.” Men and women are supposed to live up to the same expectations and follow the same rules, showing how women are capable of accomplishing and following same instructions as men. In excerpt (33:35), it says how men and women who have surrendered unto Allah, are believers, obedient, truthful, enduring, humble, who give charity, who fast, and who remember God, God has prepared forgiveness for them. Lastly, women are talked about in the Qur’an which shows that they have an importance in society. I believe it is great that men and women are considered equals in the Qur’an.

  19. Based on the Qur'an women and men were treated both equaly in Islamic culture. God wanted them to be treated equally and thats what happened. They both prayed and it says that "the men and the women, are friends one of the other; they bid to honor and forbid dishonor; they perform the prayer, and pay the alms, and they obey God and His Messenger." This quote tells us that men and women were good friends and that one or the other wasnt treated higher or lower. Usually women are treated worse but in the Qur'an the god really wanted them to be equal and the people respect the god. That means they would obey and do what he tells them.

  21. In Islam, men and women are most definitely seen as equals. The Qur'an shows that God wanted men and women to be equals. This is shown in the excerpt (9:71), "And the believers the men and the women, are friends one of the other." This shows that God not only wished for men and women to be equal, he wished for them to be friends. In the excerpt (33:35) it states, "Men and women who have surrendered (unto Allah), believing men and believing women, obedient men and obedient women, truthful men and truthful women, enduring men and enduring women, humble men and humble women, men and women who give in charity, men who fast and women who fast, men and women who remember God much, for them God has prepared forgiveness and a mighty reward." The fact that it repeatedly states, "Men and women," shows that they are equal because there is no difference in how they should worship. They also will both receive a great reward. Overall, men and women in Islam are seen as equals.

  22. In Islam woman and men are treated equal. The Qur'an is the holy book it would not want anyone to feel mistreated or that one is sex is above another. A quote from the excerpt (49:13) says, “We have created you male and female…” . It shows that male and females are equal they where created for each other. No gender is at a higher power than another. In (49:13) " O mankind we have created you male and female" This shows that god isn't only talking to men but is acknowledging women. The Allah (god) is saying that he loves all men and woman the exact same.

  23. In the Qur'an, men and women are both treated equally. The Qur'an clearly states "male and female" which shows that both are involved with the culture. "Men and women are friends, one of the other." The Qur'an also says "male and female" to show that punishment and reward are both identical for men and women. For example, in (33:35) of the Qur'an it says "for them God has prepared forgiveness and a mighty reward". Men and woman can both get this reward by:
    1.)believing men and believing women
    2.)obedient men and obedient women
    3.)truthful men and truthful women
    4.)enduring men and enduring women
    5.)humble men and humble women
6.)men and women who give in charity
7.)men who fast and women who fast
8.)men and women who remember God much
The Qur'an also doesn't say mankind in (49:13), but, rather it says "created male and female".

  24. The Qur'an views both men and women as equal in the muslim world. In the holy book, it says men and women "...are friends one of the other..." This shows that women are not looked at as being any less then men are and that they can be friends. They are not servants or workers but people, just like the men are. The book also says "...God has prepared forgiveness and a mighty reward." for both men and woman who follow the Qur'an. This shows that the muslim God doesn't care wether you are a male or a female, but that you follow the holy book. this is much different than in China or Japan, where men are superior to women.

  25. After reading some excerpts from the Qur'an I can say that men and women were treated equally. The same thing was expected from both the man and the women. A quote from the excerpt (49:13) says, “We have created you male and female…” This quote means that when they were created not one was stronger or more powerful than the other. Also a quote from (33:35) "Men and women who have surrendered (unto Allah), believing men and believing women, obedient men and obedient women, truthful men and truthful women, enduring men and enduring women, humble men and humble women, men and women who give in charity, men who fast and women who fast, men and women who remember God much, for them God has prepared forgiveness and a mighty reward." This quote means that they both had to do the same things, neither were given any short cuts. The Islamic Empire is so much different then the Japanese and Chinese Empires. In those empires they treat their woman like slaves and make them do house work all day.
